The Human City Project

Chicoco is one of the most innovative grassroots organizations in Africa. In spring 2022, the Nicholson Center was excited to co-host a visit by one of Chicoco’s founders and 2022 Harvard University School of Design Loeb Fellow, Michael Uwemedimo. With inflatable cinemas and community cartography and local renewable energy grids, Chicoco is developing technologies of light and voice that allow overlooked urban communities to make themselves seen and heard. Through the lens of climate crisis, decolonial struggle and sustainable urban transformation, he explored with us plans for the project’s next phase: how to imagine and realize a post-oil future in the oil capital of Nigeria. We look forward to exploring future collaboration with Michael and Chicoco.
